"I remember the first time I ever told my mother No," Dr. Snider recalls. "I flat out said, 'No Mom, I'm not going to do that.' What my mother wanted me to do was unwise for both of us, and, scary as it was, I had to tell her no."

As children, we are taught to honor our parents by obeying them. Although this teaching is not wrong, the words "honoring" and "obeying" become connected in such a way that adult children can be confused about how to communicate with their aging parents.
