The Last Good Light: A Southern Memoir
The Last Good Light: A Southern Memoir
The luminous world of the Mississippi Gulf Coast of the 1960's was there waiting for me, and I came a long way to find it. There were early golden days in the orange groves of Southern California, until my next teenage experience took me almost 2000 miles away to a place as foreign to the leafy groves as it could possibly be, the French Quarter of New Orleans.
Art, Dixieland jazz, creole cuisine, the Mississippi River and the powerful forces of history all collided in the galleried streets of the Quarter. Later that summer, a blanket of uncomplicated, Southern warmth welcomed me to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where waves of slate-blue rolled over a ribbon of white beach, like a post card. In the salt air of this glittering world, my coming-of -age story really began.

The orange groves of Southern California were briefly my home until the next teenage experience took me to New Orleans, almost 2000 miles away. The colorful world of The Quarter, defined by Dixieland jazz and the Mississippi River, opened the door to my next and final destination, the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where slate-blue waves lined a white beach, exactly like a post card. In the Southern salt winds of that glittering world, my coming-of-age story really began.
