The Linden Still Bloom: A Survivor's Story

De (autor): Dror Kahn

The Linden Still Bloom is an exciting holocaust memoir of a Jewish teenager's resilience, audacity and determination to live.An enthusiastic, humorous and keen-eyed story teller, Shoshana has an incredibly exciting story to tell of how with luck, courage, wits and the help of strangers she survived the Nazi's and World War 2.

Without judgement, she shares how the best and worse of human nature is revealed when people go through the most drastic circumstances.

Her message is also a warning. It was all done by people. These situations can repeat and in some places already do. Which side will you be on and how you will act is to be determined.

Her memoir is of her charmed childhood in Liepaja, Latvia, a seaside resort, and how it became a murderous hell when the Nazis conquered the country with the goal of exterminating the Jews. Through anecdotes we see her life as a German slave, during the Aktions (as the killing roundups were called), the 'miraculous' escape during the infamous Three Days in December massacre, life in the ghetto, and in Kaiserwald and Shutoff concentration camps. She tells of her gamble to make a getaway during the Death March, hiding with a brave Polish farmer, disguising as Veronica Reimer, a German frauline, and later as Jean Simon, a French POW. She tells of her life in Europe after the war and how she was smuggled into Palestine where her new life on a kibbutz began.

The Linden Still Bloom defies expectations of holocaust books by not being a grim and dark tale, though there is that too.
It is a testament to beauty and life.

A video of Shoshana Kahn telling her story was recorded for the USC Shoah Foundation. It is on youtube.
