O carte absolut SUPERBĂ pentru cititorii copii de limba engleză (nivel A2-B1), dar și pentru adulții care iubesc poveștile nostalgice cu păpuși vorbitoare. Kate Dicamillo este o maestră-păpușar în această carte care mi-a făcut inima ghem, ca mai apoi să o desfășoare de-a lungul unui fir narativ de o sensibilitate rară. Nu este o poveste tipică, are și o doză de înnegurare fără să fie, însă, înspăimântătoare...și un strop de filozofie. Fiecare păpușă are o personalitate proprie, dictată de arhetipul/personajul după care a fost creată - regele este mândru și vrea să fie adulat, fata este sensibilă și adoră să cânte, băiatul visează să facă ceva măreț, lupoaica are o obsesie pentru dinții săi „fioroși”, iar bufnița emite câte o zicală înțeleaptă.
După ce „stăpânul” lor, un marinar plin de regrete, moare, cei cinci prieteni ajung în căruța unui negustor ambulant. Intuitiv, ei știu că destinul lor este să facă parte dintr-o POVESTE grandioasă. Ceea ce se și întâmplă în cadrul unei frumoase povești în ramă. Aceștia sunt cumpărați de bărbat bogat ale cărei nepoate, alături de Jane, fata în casă, pun în scenă o mică piesă de teatru de păpuși (după ce sunt recuperate toate păpușile care între timp trecuseră prin niște peripeții fiind aruncate, modificate, furate).
Este muultă inocență în "The Puppets of Spelhorst", păpușile sunt ca niște copii din câlți care au acces la lume în măsura în care o pot vedea și auzi din locul unde sunt așezate. Nu se mișcă, nu merg, nu glăsuiesc decât între ele.
Cartea care face parte dintr-o serie (dar se poate citi ca atare). Recomand, de asemenea, a doua carte din serie, "Hotel Balzaar".
Ilustrațiile lui Julie Morstad sunt și ele SPLENDIDE!
