T. Howard Carleton-Howie to his friends, if he had any, which he doesn't-is a rich self-made heel. So when a drunken date ends in murder and a car crash, he goes underground in Monterey as a cook on a fishing boat. After all, escaping the wreckage of his car, he looks like a bruised and battered bum. But more than merely escaping a murder rap, Carleton now finds himself with a second chance at life.
He becomes Tom Howie, a Cannery Row fisherman. But he just can't quite hide his arrogance. He soon becomes involved with the beautiful low-class Ginny, but is also intrigued by her social-climbing cousin Gail. And before long, he reverts to old patterns, making new enemies, daring everyone to hate him. But for Carleton, the only real enemy is himself.
