What does life look like when your family is stable and seems to be doing well for a family of color in Los Angeles, California? Suddenly things change after a new President is elected. The demographics of the neighborhoods change as it becomes drug infested, social programs that united families go away, her mother loses her job and her parents divorce.

Although strong in mind, once she enrolls at an HBCU where she sees others that look like her, insecurity settles in. She learns to rely on her faith and journaling skills to secures her educational goals.

She moves her city forward by cleaning up the environment so that citizens feel safer and better about being a citizen in New Orleans as they see equal opportunity for all people. While making adjustments to a city as the first female African American Mayor, she remains attentive, loyal and loving as a mother to cherished love, her daughter Rayann.

This story exemplifies how a working mother, Mayor, wife and daughter perseveres while rebuilding the neighborhood of Broadmoor and beyond.

Brown Girl Resilience Book of its collection pays homage to people of color (black and brown) and their struggles. In this book, Mayor Latoya Cantrell exemplifies how girls can reach their dreams even in challenging circumstances.
